What was supposed to be a routine maintenance job at the Atlanta Zoo became a nightmare for independent plumber Mike Tucker—and viral entertainment for everyone else.
Tucker was performing drainage work in the elephant enclosure when the animals became unexpectedly agitated. Before handlers could intervene, a stampede had begun—directly over the drainage access where Tucker was working.
“I was shoulder-deep in elephant waste when the ground started shaking.”
"I was shoulder-deep in elephant... waste... when the ground started shaking," Tucker recounted, still visibly traumatized. "Next thing I know, there's two tons of pachyderm dancing on my head."
Emergency services extracted Tucker after a harrowing ninety-minute operation. He emerged covered head-to-toe in what witnesses describe as "every type of zoo matter imaginable."
The incident quickly went viral, with video clips garnering millions of views across social media platforms. Most painful for Tucker: the response from his rivals.
"Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy," Eugene Dawson posted on social media, alongside laughing emojis. The union's official account shared the footage with the caption: "This is what happens when you don't pay your dues."
Dick Cedar personally called in to a morning radio show to discuss the incident. "Mike Tucker, the elephant whisperer! I always said he was full of—well, you know what he's full of now!"
Tucker has announced he will take legal action against the zoo for unsafe working conditions. In the meantime, he's been spotted spending long hours at a local car wash, attempting to remove the smell from his work van.
